APHA Annual Meeting 2022 Preview

By | November 4, 2022

It’s that time of year again–APHA’s Annual Meeting! This year we’ll be meeting in Boston Nov. 6-9 with a digital event Nov. 14-16. I’m looking forward to seeing colleagues this year and getting to catch up with so many interesting people. Of course, I’m also excited about the excellent Medical Care Section Program. Here’s a preview of Medical Care Section sessions:

Sunday, November 6

We are kicking off the Annual Meeting with a mentoring session for students and early-career professionals (9:30am-11am, session 227). We’ll have mentors there to talk about types of jobs, work and life balance, research funding, working in a medical research setting, and other topics. I’ll be there as well and a few mentors have agreed to look at CVs/Resumes. Stop by to chat.

Our scientific sessions that day cover a breadth of topics from digital health equity to justice and incarcerated health (Sessions 2105, 2106, and 2201).

Finish off your Sunday by coming to our business meeting (6pm-7pm, session 250) to talk about election strategies and updates from APHA.

Monday, November 7

Our Monday morning business meeting (7am-8am, session 308) will be a great intro to the section for those who don’t know us as well. Come learn how our section works!

We have a lot of excellent scientific sessions on Monday, about the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare delivery (session 3087), current issues in health economics, health services research (poster sessions 3122 and 3124), and delivery (session 3123). Take a look at the poster abstracts ahead of time so you don’t miss any!

Later in the day, come check out our sessions on health equity (3233, 3234), veterans and military health (3189), rural health (3288), and medication and service use in special populations (3289).

Our topic-based committees ins Health Equity (353), Justice and Incarcerated Health (354), Health Services Research (381), and Rural and Frontier Health (382) meet Monday night.

Tuesday, November 8

Ever wondered about the enduring connection between the Medical Care Section and the journal Medical Care? Come to our business meeting (7-8am, session 406) to learn and give input on current directions. We’ll be talking about the blog as well so bloggers are welcome!

With even more scientific sessions on Tuesday, there is something for everyone. Whether you are interested in QI’s financial implications, COVID in prisons, healthcare delivery, or other topics–there is something for you!

The best student papers will be presented Tuesday afternoon (4:30-6:30pm, session 4331) in a session for the award winners. After watching these great presentations, come join us for An Evening With Dr. Adam Gaffney (6pm-8:30pm). Among other achievements, Dr. Gaffney is the immediate past president of Physicians for a National Health Program. He’ll share insight about his life and career in public health. Our Viseltear Awardee this year is Dr. Merlin Chowkwanyun for his book, All Health Politics Is LocalCommunity Battles for Medical Care and Environmental Health (UNC Press, 2022). This largely social event promises to be both fun and enlightening.

Wednesday, November 9

Our last business meeting is Wednesday morning (7am-8am, session 500) where we will hear from our governing councilors and debrief the Annual Meeting. Later that day we’ll have some more excellent scientific sessions about social and economic factors, access, equity, and outcomes.

Looking forward to seeing some of you at the meeting. Come by the Section Kiosk in the exhibit hall, the business meetings, or the scientific session to say hi!
