Call for Applicants: the Barbara Starfield Scholar Award

Barbara StarfieldBarbara Starfield was a pediatrician, primary care researcher, and member of the Medical Care section of the American Public Health Association. She passed away suddenly in 2011, and in 2016, the section decided to honor her memory by creating a new award: the Barbara Starfield Medical Care Scholar Award.

The purpose of this award is to offer leadership and professional development opportunities to outstanding students in APHA.

The award covers one year of APHA membership, APHA Annual Meeting registration, and transportation to the meeting.

Responsibilities

  • Help staff the Medical Care Section booth and other events
  • Attend a Joint Policy hearing, a Governing Council meeting, Medical Care Section business meetings and sessions
  • Write a blog post, news article, or op-ed as part of the reporting requirement

Requirements

  • Must be a full- or part-time graduate or undergraduate student at time of application (may graduate prior to Annual Meeting)
  • Must be an APHA member to apply
  • If awarded and not already a member, must become a member of the Medical Care Section
