Welcome! April 2023 marks a new milestone for the Healthy Intersections Podcast (HIP), sponsored by the American Public Health Association’s Medical Care Section. I’m taking on the role of the main producer of HIP. We’re also moving to a video AND audio format, starting this month!

This month’s HIP features Part 1 of a conversation between me (in my professional role as Senior Health Services Researcher, RTI International, and Director of the RTI Rarity™ project) and my colleague, Dr. Carol Schmitt (Chief Scientist, RTI International).

We discuss the interactive map produced by RTI International for Illinois, which is publicly viewable.  Zooming in on several areas, we discuss the local social inequity in life expectancy (LSI-LE) scores and some of the underlying social and behavioral determinants of those scores, including:

  • Poverty
  • Lack of insurance
  • Unemployment
  • Bias, stress, and trauma
  • Smoking
  • Sedentary behaviors

Do you want YOUR state featured on HIP? Let us know in the comments!

Rounding out this month, we also provide a quick summary of The Medical Care Blog posts published in March 2023, and we preview a few notable articles published in Medical Care in April. Finally, if you’re an APHA Medical Care section member, check APHA LEAD for info about the Health Equity First Fridays networking events, starting up again in May.

Click below for the video/audio, and thanks for listening (and watching!).
